  1. Hey Amelie! This is the edited version.(Part 1)

In the small town of Black Rock, just outside of Dublin, Amel’ie Esprit and her sister Aquila Felis were meeting in a pub, just off the main street. This pub, well, it wasn’t very big. It only had six stools and a pool table, all crammed into the same room as the bar. Amel’ie arrived fifteen minutes late and because of her respect for punctuality, Aquila was already there. She sat on the only blue stool, made specially for her. Amel’ie ordered the usual vodka and lemonade while Aquila rattled on and on about how her and her husband were trying for a baby. The two girls then went on the chat amicably about how their lives have been. Just then, two locals who had had too much to drink started fighting with each other. Fists flew in a flurry of skin tones and the fighter’s drunken slurring scraped against the girl’s ears. Soon, an empty beer bottle smashed into an innocent by-stander’s leg, causing the tension in the bar to erupt. Poor peacemaker Amel’ie tried to break up the fight.

“Stop!” she shouted, the noise nearly drowning her out. “We’ll all get arrested!”

A man turned to her with a wild look in his eyes and picked her up by the collar of her shirt, as if she were nothing more than a new-born cat. Darkness flashed across Amel’ie’s eyes and she blinked, clearing it away. The man’s face twisted into an evil snarl and he threw Amel’ie across the room. She landed facefirst, smashing cups and beer bottles. Aquila let out a strangled cry and tried her best to run over. She was so shocked, her eyes brimmed with tears. Amel’ie used her telepathy to talk to Aquila. “Don’t cry,” her voice whispered in Aquila’s mind, drowning out all other noise. “Keep calm and call the ambulance.” Her whisper turned urgent. “Hurry!”

Aquila’s body racked with sobs. Her fingers fumbled with her impossibly sleek handphone. The last Amel’ie heard was her sister’s caring voice, “Hello? Quick, come, there’s a fight…”

  2. And part 2:

Aquila’s trembling fingers fumbled with her impossibly sleek handphone. “Hello? Quick, come, there’s a fight…. My sister’s injured…. Hurry!” She hung up and turned to Amel’ie. Amel’ie’s eyes dropped as she lost consciousness. Blood flowed freely from the deep slash in Amel’ie’s forehead. The sounds of the fight raged around them, the drunkards not minding the girls in the corner. Aquila quickly pocketed her handphone, her trembling, slim fingers moving over Amel’ie’s cut, trying to stanch the flow of blood.

The ambulance arrived a long twenty minutes later, its gaudy lights flashing, siren wailing. By then, the fight had already broken up, teeth and blood on the floor, mixing with the beer from the smashed bottles. The stench was overpowering. The doctor gently placed Amel’ie on the stretcher and they hurried her to the back of the ambulance. Being immediate family, Aquila sat at the back, keeping a close and careful watch on Amel’ie. Her wounds cleaned and patched up, they didn’t look so bad. Halfway to the hospital, Amel’ie woke up to an excruciating pain in her back.

“Ow,” she moaned, trying to sit up. “Where are we?”

Aquila put a reassuring hand on Amel’ie’s chest, pushing her back down to the bed. “Shh,” she shushed her. “We’re in an ambulance. Don’t move. Your back’s been hurt. Any wrong movement could--”

“Potentially paralyse you,” the doctor finished.

Amel’ie lay back down uncomfortably, wincing once again. The pain grew, and Amel’ie passed out. The ambulance screeched to a halt, a grinding noise of wheels against the tarmac ground. The back doors flew open and the nurses gingerly transported Amel’ie to the X-Ray Department to have her back X-rayed, Aquila trailing after them in sisterly tenderness. Amel’ie awoke to a bright light and saw a kindly doctor smiling down at her. She was lying on a cold metal bed. “Don’t worry,” the doctor said reassuringly. “I’ll just X-Ray your back for injuries, okay? If you want, we can call in your sister.”

Amel’ie was in such great pain, she could only shake her head. The doctor positioned the X-Ray machine and went inside the small room. The machine whirred to life, and after a zap, the noise died down. They loaded Amel’ie into a wheelchair and Aquila wheeled her to have her injuries analyzed. In the doctor’s room, the doctor frowned at the report. “Well,” he began, then he paused. “Well,” he began again, his thick, furry eyebrows shooting up in surprise. “You need an operation to relocate a section of your spine.”

Amel’ie and Aquila groaned as one.

“Unfortunately,” the doctor continued, “All our operating theatres are being used up, so you have to wait an hour before you can go in. Even then, the operation will last about 45 minutes.”

Aquila shrugged. “We’re prepared to wait.”
